Michael van Gerwen struggles past Peter Wright but into final session at Austrian Darts Open

Michael van Gerwen is into the last eight at the Austrian Darts Open as he chases a first European Tour title of the season later this evening in Graz.

Van Gerwen won 6-4 over Peter Wright in the third round. In doing so, 'Mighty Mike' recorded an average of 93.92, compared to 95.50 for his Scottish opponent. The Dutchman broke his rival in the first leg with a 58 finish and then doubled the lead, but Van Gerwen could not shake off his opponent any further.

Wright kept himself in the match by throwing out 96 and 114, among others. Finally, Van Gerwen was allowed to throw for the match at a score of 5-4. The player from Vlijmen was not out in five innings, but Wright could not take advantage of that. With a 16-darter, 'Mighty Mike' secured himself a spot in the last eight.

In the quarterfinals, Van Gerwen will face Ross Smith, whom Van Gerwen lost to last week in the semifinals of the European Darts Grand Prix. Smith qualified for the finals of this tournament by beating Daniel Klose 6-2.
