Raymond van Barneveld defeated world number 1 Michael van Gerwen to put the reigning world champion at risk of elimination in the Champions League of Darts.
Barney was in superb from hitting 8 180’s and 43% on the doubles as the former 5 time world champion cruised past his compatriot and world cup team partner. The pair traded the opening 2 legs before Barney opened up a 3-1 lead. Van Gerwen had his highest finish of 82 to win the 5th leg and reduce the deficit to just a leg. That was the closest he would get to elder Dutchman, Barney again reeling off consecutive legs to lead 6-2, hitting a 136 in leg 7.
MvG did get the first leg back after the break to trail 7-4. But the lead was too great for him to recover, Barney finishing 81 in 2 darts to get over the line.
Barney now faces Phil Taylor this evening to set up yet another installment of darts ‘el classico’. MvG must defeat Adrian Lewis if he has any chance of making the semi-finals.
