2017 runner-up Danny Noppert and winner of the Finders Darts Masters 2017 reached the first round of the BDO World Championship thanks to a straight-sets victory over American Joe Chaney.
It was emotional night for the Dutchman, who lost his mother on New Year’s Eve, but he put in a strong performance to progress. Thanks to playing in a decreased number of tournaments in the past year, Noppert had to enter at the preliminary stage despite going all the way to last year’s final. His quest to take the title that Glen Durrant claimed last January started with a fairly straightforward task against Chaney, who only threatened in short bursts.
A 94.76 average and three maximums was more than enough for Noppert, who broke in the very first leg and never looked back. The highlights of Noppie’s finishing were 121 and 126 checkouts, the latter of which came at a crucial time in the second set. Noppert blew a two-leg lead in the third, but when Chaney missed his chance to grab a set, the Dutchman cut straight through the Chainsaw to win. Next up for Danny is a mouth-watering tie against BDO world number one Mark McGeeney.
