Co Stompé is being held accountable for having a tax debt of at least 116,100 euros, roughly 107,000 pounds. Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad states the former professional darts player and his wife Daniële submitted multiple false declarations concerning their turnover and income tax between 2009 and 2013.
The total debt adds up to more than a quarter million euros, as became clear following a hearing in court about the case in the Dutch city of Almelo. The pair’s lawyers speak of a lower figure of 61,000 euros.
The 2010 World Cup of Darts champion stated in court that he is not involved with the administration. His wife Daniëlle admitted that she had made a mistake, but that she had no other option but to manage the business administration by herself, as hiring an accountant was unaffordable at that point.
”We have even had to sell our wedding rings to get through this”, ‘The Matchstick’ emotionally said during the hearing. Stompé and his wife now face either 240 hours of community service or both 120 days in a cell as well as a three-month suspended sentence.
