Just a month after gaining his Tour Card, Corey Cadby has his first Pro Tour victory.
The rising star battled through a gruelling day to win UK Open Qualifying 5. A 99.7 average across 70 legs helped Cadby to eight wins on Saturday. That succession of successes secured the £10,000 top prize. Victory also confirmed a spot in the third round of the UK Open next month. The King started the day in the round of 512. There, he thrashed two-time world champion John Part. He followed it by defeating Benito van de Pas in a thriller. Big Ben was 5-1 up, but missed a series of match darts. His misses allowed Cadby to roar back to claim a 6-5 win.
Jason Lowe and Darren Johnson were powerless to stop the rampant Aussie. Cadby beat compatriot Simon Whitlock 6-2, before overcoming fellow ex-youth world champion Michael Smith. A 6-1 semi-final thrashing of Kim Huybrechts set up a meeting with Rob Cross in the final. And a 6-4 win sent the top prize Cadby’s way. That came courtesy of a 109 average, plus checkouts of 161 and 134.
“Last week I didn’t really perform as well as I know I should, but today I played really well,” said the 22-year-old prodigy.
“I was 5-1 down against Benito and managed to come back and win 6-5 so I was pretty rapt with that win, and it was onwards and upwards from there.
“I shouldn’t have won that, and from the next games onwards I was a free man and I just played my own game. I know what I’m capable of and it’s just whether you put the darts in the board and perform.”
World champion in the making?
Cadby has set his sights on following in Cross’ footsteps one day, by becoming world champion.
“Everyone wants to be world champion. And Rob doing what he did last year goes to show that if you win your Tour Card, anyone has a chance,”
“He’s done it and I’m looking to do it as well, but you’ve got to let your darts do the talking.”
