In an unlikely repeat of a meeting at the 2010 World Masters, Gary Robson once again defeated Pengiran Mohamed 3-0. The preliminary round victory at the BDO World Championship sets up a first round tie against Glen Durrant for three-time quarter-finalist Robson.
Mohamed made history simply by stepping up to the oche, as the first ever player from Brunei to feature in a darts world championship. He delighted the crowd by taking a leg in the first set, but Robson struck two 180s on the way to winning the other three. ‘Big Robbo’ kicked off the second set with another maximum, followed by a 118 checkout. He went one better in the second leg, again finding the double 19 for a 158 finish. The World Championship regular – though he missed last year’s event – sealed a 2-0 lead with ease.
It was a straightforward victory for Robson, who averaged around 20 points more than his opponent for long stretches. Despite some double trouble in the last leg, he crossed the line and sealed a meeting with fellow North-East ace Durrant. Having beaten then-favourite Michael van Gerwen 11 years ago, Robson will be looking to repeat the feat using the momentum generated by this win.
