Ted Hankey became BDO World Champion for the second time in 2009, which allowed him to make his debut at the Grand Slam of Darts later that year.
Hankey finished third in a group with Scott Waites, Simon Whitlock and Wayne Mardle but he wasn’t a big fan of the crowd during the event and their reaction to the BDO.
“It wasn’t the problem of the organisation or the TV. The problem was the crowd, the crowd were anti-BDO and that was where it was wrong. All of the politics of the game should have been chucked out of the window,” said Hankey on the Weekly Dartscast.
“That’s what annoyed me more than anything, it was the fact that they weren’t showing respect to the BDO players, not just myself. They just wanted the BDO players to get battered and get out of the building, the crowd, obviously that’s changed over time but that was what it was at the time and I really didn’t like it.”
“I just wasn’t interested. I just thought if this is how I’m going to play darts, I don’t want to play darts. That’s how I felt at that time to be honest.”Tags: Grand Slam of Darts, Ted Hankey
