Ryan Meikle is gearing up for his PDC World Championship debut and he recently sat down with DartsNews.com to give his thoughts ahead of his maiden tilt at the showpiece event.
Meikle said that for him it is a massive ‘dream come true’ to be gracing the Alexandra Palace and he unlike others who may be feeling the nerves at this point cannot wait to get up there.
“Really looking forward to the Worlds now, It is a massive dream come true for me to be there and I just can’t wait to be up on that stage,” said Meikle to DartsNews.com.
Season has been ‘best one yet by a mile’
Meikle qualified through the ProTour route instead of the Development Tour where he has also performed well and said it is a testament to how well he has played all year.
Also the Ipswich ace called it his best season so far in his four years on the tour so is glad to reap the rewards.
“I’m happy I’ve qualified via the Pro Tour, I feel I deserve my place as it’s so hard to qualify via that and means you’ve been so consistent all year so I’m happy. I’ve had 4 years on the Pro Tour now and it’s been the best one yet by a mile.”
Potential tie against Darren Webster
He will face Yuki Yamada in the first round and for Meikle, while he is not looking past him he would ‘love’ the chance to face Darren Webster, who he travels with and has learnt off but that his plan is to just concentrate on that first tie against the Asian Tour qualifier.
“To be fair I don’t know much about Yuki (Yamada) but I do know the Asian Tour is getting bigger and bigger and there a lot of good players coming over so I just have to concentrate on myself and make sure I play as well as I can,
Of course I’d love to play against Darren (Webster) 2nd round as I travel with him most weekends and have learn a lot from him but I haven’t thought about it at all really I’m just concentrating on the first round.”
Preparation ahead of World Championship
“Being a Barber we all know Christmas is such a busy time, so it’s nice in a way to take my mind off the darts and not worry to much about it,
I’m practising really well I’ve been really dedicated this year and it’s paid off, a lot of people ask if I’m practising a lot more leading up to the worlds but I’m just sticking to my routine and not trying to change to much as that’s worked for me all year.”
Players Championship Finals run
Meikle reached the Last 16 at the Players Championship Finals recently and he called it a big ‘confidence booster’ and one that he hopes can carry him on to further success going into the World Championship.
“Players Championship was a great weekend for me I really enjoyed it, it’s a massive confidence booster for myself and I just love the big occasions up on stage so I’m hoping I can carry it on.”
‘The Barber’ finished in the Tour Card positions of the Development Tour this year winning two events but despite having this sewn up he is not resting on his laurels and wants to finish in the Top 64 to confirm his Tour Card that way.
“My main aim this year on Development Tour was to regain my Tour Card which I’ve managed to do, although I’ve still got a chance to retain it by being top 64 of the World which I’d much rather be, but nice to know if things don’t go to plan I’ve got another 2 years guaranteed.”
