Michael van Gerwen claimed a third UK Open title last Sunday after defeating Gerwyn Price in a thrilling final in Minehead.

A relieved Van Gerwen spoke to Dartsnews in the aftermath, after finally winning his first title of the season. “This has cost a lot of energy. I have come from a long way. It is fantastic to finish the tournament this way. I really had to work for it, which is why I am so happy that I won this tournament.”

The open draw at the UK Open makes it possible to get far in the tournament with some lucky draws. That was certainly not the case with Van Gerwen. He beat defending champion Nathan Aspinall, Jason Lowe, James Wade, Rob Cross, Daryl Gurney and then Price in the final en route to the title.

”I have had no luck”, said the world number one with a big smile on his face. ”Of course it gives more dimension to this tournament for myself. I’m happy with what I have shown. I can move on with this because this victory gives me a lot of confidence.”

First success with new darts

Not only was it the first title of the season for Van Gerwen, it was also his first victory with his new Winmau darts. That makes the triumph even more special for Mighty Mike.

”That means a lot for me. Of course I moved to Winmau and there was a lot of discussion about that. I gave myself three or four months and they are not even over yet. Of course things are going well with thse darts and I will certainly continue with these darts in the coming weeks. If you win a tournament with such impressive averages, then you are doing well.”

Van Gerwen tried a new set of darts during the Premier League in Exeter prior to the UK Open, but lost 7-4 to Michael Smith. He then picked up his old Winmau set again, in which he already played with in February. That choice turned out to be worth its weight in gold in Minehead.

”Not everything comes as it comes. For some things you have to work hard. I worked very hard this tournament and I think there is more to come. The last few weeks I have not doubted myself. I tried some things in the Premier League last week. I don’t regret it at all. You choose for something and then you should not moan afterwards. You just have to say it worked or it didn’t work.”

The old Winmau darts seemed ‘to work’. Reason enough for Van Gerwen to end the conversation positively. “I can safely say that I am proud of myself.”
