The Masters 2020 preview and schedule: Sunday February 2, afternoon session

There are some spicy matches on the menu as the Masters nears its conclusion.

Adrian Lewis and Michael Smith should get Sunday's quarter-finals going in style. Both play a fluid, fast-flowing game and this will be a delight if both hit the ground running. Smith opened his Masters in exactly the right style, marrying his usual prodigious scoring with some well-timed finishes. Lewis wasn't as sharp, but was good enough to send Rob Cross packing. He'll be aiming for at least a semi-final to start a vital year.

Jonny Clayton sent Michael van Gerwen packing in one of the big Masters shocks. That it's such a shock is only a reflection of the Dutchman's usual dominance, of course; Clayton is an excellent player. The Welsh star will now have eyes on pipping Nathan Aspinall to a place in the last four. The Asp was miles off the pace in a stuttering win over James Wade. It's unlikely that the Stockport star will put in a repeat performance.

Ando takes aim at Price

The dust has settled in the Gerwyn Price-Gary Anderson rivalry, but there could be a little bit of animosity simmering. Could a Masters rumble be the catalyst for a revival? Neither will be focused on anything more than battling through to the evening session. Price and Anderson will both be happy enough with the scoring in wins over Simon Whitlock and Ian White respectively. But they'll be keen on developing a ruthless streak that wasn't there when Whitlock and White pushed their first round games all the way. Given the quality of opponent, they'll need it.

There were questions on how Peter Wright would kick off his first tournament since becoming world champion. The answer was emphatic. Snakebite dismissed Joe Cullen with a 103.55 average and looks fully at ease with his darts - he's in a very good place. Even defeat to Dave Chisnall wouldn't dissipate that buzz. A bespectacled Chizzy won a battle of wits with Daryl Gurney and has the world champion in his newly-calibrated sights. Only one of these players can reach a second successive Masters semi-final; it's likely the other will go out in a blaze of glory.

In the evening's semi-finals, Lewis or Smith will play Clayton or Aspinall. That'll be followed by Price or Anderson taking on Wright or Chisnall.
