German qualifier Michael Unterbuchner has won through to the first round of the BDO World Championship with a gruelling 3-2 defeat of David Cameron.
There was pre-match drama, as Cameron’s bags failed to arrive in time. It left the Canadian without darts. Luckily, Mark McGeeney was on hand to offer him a spare set. It took Cameron a while to settle with his new setup, and Unterbuchner claimed the first set. But Cameron responded by taking the next two sets, including hitting a classy 130 checkout against the throw.
Unterbuchner was able to force a fifth set decider, and that tense tussle went all the way to an eighth leg. The German, 4-3 up, watched Cameron miss darts to continue the tie before landing double four with his last dart in hand. Unterbuchner now leads in the 180 count, having hit eight maximums across the five sets. He will take on third seed Jamie Hughes in the first round at the Lakeside.
