PDC stars set for record Order of Merit gains after World Darts Championship

The World Darts Championship often has a massive impact on the PDC Order of Merit. This year, the prize fund is set to send earnings through the roof.

The 2020 World Darts Championship boasts a prize fund of £2.5 million. All of the 96 players involved picked up a minimum of £7,500; those still involved will see their PDC Order of Merit totals increase significantly.

That's particularly true for whoever should win the title, and claim the £500,000 top prize. Should Michael van Gerwen retain the trophy, his Order of Merit tally is projected to rise to £1,906,750.

Top PDC statistician Christopher Kempf confirmed that this would be an all-time record figure. In February 2017, van Gerwen set the current record figure of £1,842,000.

Major gains

The other three semi-finalists will see their stature rise as well. Gerwyn Price is now well clear of Rob Cross as second in the Order of Merit. Should he win the title, the Iceman can narrow the gap on van Gerwen, though the world number one will still be close to £400,000 clear even in Price's best-case scenario.

Peter Wright leapfrogs Gary Anderson once the World Darts Championship ends. If he makes the final, Wright will at least be third in the world, and can go back to PDC world number two if he claims the trophy.

Nathan Aspinall has also flown up the rankings, confirming a place in the PDC top ten for the first time. He can also become world number two by winning the tournament, or can leapfrog Wright if he beats van Gerwen in the semi-finals, and if Wright loses to Price.

Winners and losers

Further down the Order of Merit, other players have seen the effects of the World Darts Championship.

Darius Labanauskas is now at his best position since joining the PDC, moving up 30 places to 52nd in the projected table. Fellow quarter-finalists Glen Durrant and Luke Humphries also rise, with the former to end his maiden PDC campaign at 22nd in the Order of Merit.

Thanks to their Ally Pally exploits, Nico Kurz, Fallon Sherrock and Seigo Asada are now 87th, 90th and 91st respectively.

Matthew Edgar saved his Tour Card by reaching the World Darts Championship, but it wasn't such good news for Toni Alcinas, Alan Norris and James Richardson. That's despite Richardson reaching the second round in London before losing to John Henderson.
