The PDC World Matchplay moves into the second round on Tuesday evening.
Opening the Tuesday session are the PDC world numbers seven and eight, Dave Chisnall and Michael Smith. Chizzy had a simple task in knocking out an off-par Keegan Brown in round one. Smith faced a tougher foe in Jonny Clayton, but also cruised through his World Matchplay opener. Both are renowned high scorers – finishing could well be the key to success.
Joe Cullen is one of just two unseeded players to reach the second round. The Rockstar had no qualms either, cruising past Gerwyn Price in Blackpool. Daryl Gurney survived a litany of match darts against Steve West. His round one reprieve is unlikely to repeat itself, if Cullen has the chance to win.
The Bradford ace was one of the unseeded giant-killers, the other was Jeffrey de Zwaan. The Black Cobra slayed the biggest threat of all, Michael van Gerwen. The last time he did that in a major, the UK Open, he lost in the next round. Hoping to step into Paul Hogan’s shoes is 2017 semi-finalist Adrian Lewis. Jackpot came perilously close to crashing out against James Wilson, who very much let the two-time world champion back into the game. Given the chance, de Zwaan isn’t likely to offer the same gift.
The final tie of the night is easily the highlight. It comes between two greats of the game who somehow haven’t yet tasted World Matchplay success. Gary Anderson was briefly troubled by Stephen Bunting in round one. Raymond van Barneveld was similarly pressured by Kyle Anderson, but also won. The two ex-PDC world champions collide in a colossal clash at the Winter Gardens. The winner of the tie will truly fancy themselves in their half of the draw.
Play kicks off at 7pm – UK viewers can watch the action on Sky Sports.
