Premier League Darts 2020 preview and schedule: Night Two, Nottingham

Night Two of the Premier League Darts 2020 is one of many opportunities.

There's a chance for some to build on a strong start to their Premier League Darts campaign. For others, a shot at redemption after a disappointing opener - and a need to avoid a worrying trend. And for one contender in Nottingham, another step on a journey that's attracting attention from around the globe.

We begin with a repeat of the 2019 UK Open final. Nathan Aspinall will be back to defend his crown soon, but first he faces a tough Premier League Darts test. John Henderson ended up not being the tough test he was billed to be, and the Asp defied the Aberdeen bearpit to cruise to victory. Rob Cross was one of two players to rack up a three-figure average last week, but had to settle for a draw. Aspinall is the form player here, having blown away the field in a superb Players Championship 2 triumph, winning his first final of the year.

Gerwyn Price was the opponent for both Cross and Aspinall in the games mentioned. The start of his season has therefore been a case of 'close, but no cigar'. The Welshman will have billed this match-up with Michael Smith as a game he should - or must - win. Smith was wasteful against Glen Durrant ; it's not something you can get away with in the Premier League Darts, and definitely not something Price will forgive.

There's a clash of world champions in the third game, as Scotland's top two meet. They had mixed fortunes on home soil last week. Gary Anderson held off Daryl Gurney and is showing signs of getting back to his prolific best, while Wright stormed into a lead against Michael van Gerwen , only to slip to defeat. Despite that, Wright's still the favourite. Snakebite looks incredibly comfortable with the set he has, and won't stand for successive defeats after two poor Premier League Darts campaigns in 2018 and 2019.

Sherrock of Nottingham

Whether you're a fan or a critic, the Fallon Sherrock roadshow has a lot of legs left. Next up is Nottingham for the history maker, and she has shown the same mix of excitement and determination that has helped her rapid rise. The former Lakeside world finalist takes on a player who took that particular title three times. Glen Durrant could trade fairytale stories with Sherrock; his PDC journey continued with a win in his debut as a Premier League Darts regular. Duzza wears his emotions on his sleeve but may favour a more steely approach, with the Nottingham crowd likely to back Sherrock vociferously. Win here, and it's a continuation to a perfect start.

Michael van Gerwen and Daryl Gurney both were involved in 7-5 scorelines, but it's Mighty Mike who comes in having won, and Gurney facing down the barrel of two defeats from two. But that's not how Superchin will think of it. After all, he beat van Gerwen twice in last year's Premier League Darts. He'll need to be watertight on the doubles, but it's not out of the question at all. Van Gerwen can stamp his authority on the league with victory, though there's a long way left to go whatever happens.
