Dan Read and Martin Atkins have added their names to the list of Riley’s qualifiers for the UK Open.
The pair, who both tried their hand at Q-School this year, won in Chorlton and Twickenham respectively. It is a second success in two years for Read. The 22-year-old missed out on a title defence at London Victoria. But he battled through the Chorlton field to book his ticket to Minehead. Read appeared at the UK Open as a Riley’s qualifier in 2017. On the main stage, the Berkshire ace lost 6-3 against Jamie Caven.
Wigan’s Martin Atkins travelled south to claim victory at Riley’s Twickenham. The 42-year-old has previously won a Challenge Tour title. Minehead is unchartered territory, however, as Atkins will make his debut in March. There are eight Riley’s spots left to be decided before the ‘FA Cup of Darts’.
In round one, Read will take on Joe Davis. The draw revealed that Ron Meulenkamp or the second Nottingham qualifier will meet the winner in the second round. Atkins faces a mouth-watering tie against John Part in round two. That is if he can overcome the second Riley’s Liverpool qualifier, and if the two-time world champion can beat the first Wolverhampton winner.
