Corrine Hammond became the first seed to crash out of the BDO World Championship, as last year’s runner-up lost 2-1 to Fallon Sherrock.
2015 finalist Sherrock overcame the Australian 2-1 in a tight game decided by the Milton Keynes thrower’s more consistent scoring. It was a nervy opening, with the pair not finding their feet straight away. Sherrock began to find the trebles late on in the set, and broke Hammond’s throw to go 1-0 up.
Fifth seed Hammond responded strongly in the second set, firing in the first 180 and narrowly missing the bull for a 170. Sherrock was unable to pick up a leg as the tie went to a deciding set. But it was Sherrock who kept her cool to claim the win, and a plum tie against Lisa Ashton, who denied her the title three years ago.
Elsewhere, Chris Harris overcame Ümit Uygunsözlü 3-2 to seal a first round clash against Dean Reynolds on Monday. The first Turkish player ever to play in a darts world championship fell behind early on, but made it 1-1 in sets thanks to some solid scoring.
It was some shambolic finishing that scuppered Uygunsözlü. Harris edged the third set thanks to many missed chances from his opponent, who then rallied to win the fourth. But, after yet more double trouble, it was the Welshman who prevailed and earned the chance to take on his compatriot at the Lakeside.
