Dimitri Van den Bergh claimed victory in the final of the World Matchplay and his father Chris is very proud of him and believes there is a lot more to come.

“This week took half a year of my life,” he laughs a day after his son’s major win. “I had more nerves when watching my son than I did when I was a top player myself.

It is nice that, after a whole week of good play, he was able to cap it off with a title. I am really proud of him, but that is always the case as a father,” said Van den Bergh to RTL Nieuws .

Chris used to play himself, he won the French Open title in 2001. “All my sons have inherited it a bit, but Dimitri at a higher level. And I always thought he was going to do great things, but I didn’t expect that much at the time.”

Due to his victory in the World Matchplay, Van den Bergh has risen to twelfth place in the PDC Order of Merit, but his father does not see that as an end point. “This is just the beginning. I think he’s going to get even better because he’s only 26 years old. So he still has a lot of time to gain experience. ”
