Dirk van Duijvenbode can call himself the first ever online world champion in darts. The Titan defeated Scott Waites in the final with 15-12.

The unofficial online world championship was appropriately named Championship of Various International Darters. Abbreviated C.O.V.I.D. as a reference to the coronavirus. Beside Van Duijvenbode, the event attracted more than 1500 participants.

Among the field were players from 62 different nations. PDC Tour Card holders Luke Humphries, Chris Dobey and Kim Huybrechts also entered the online world championship.

Dobey and Humphries both lost to Waites, who reached the final in the top half of the draw. Van Duijvenbode was only challenged in the fifth round. Richard Veenstra missed five match darts against the Dutchman, who won all his other matches to the final with a minimum of six legs difference.

The final was a lot more exciting in terms of the scoreline. The Titan led 4-1 and 7-3, before Waites reduced the deficit to 12-13 after hitting a 160 checkout. He couldn’t came closer as Van Duijvenbode claimed the two following legs to claim the title.
