It seems Michael van Gerwen’s talents go beyond the dartboard.

Mighty Mike was present in the Czech Republic last weekend for a professional poker tournament. The world number one chose to play in ‘The Big Game’ event, rather than participate the UK Open Qualifiers in Wigan. It proved a sound choice. With £22,000 earned, van Gerwen finished top of the UK Open Order of Merit.

At the qualifiers, van Gerwen could have earned 10,000 pounds per tournament. During the poker tournament, larger amounts were on offer, but according to reports the Masters champion went home with a loss.

The two-time world champion did enjoy a personal highlight in the Czech Republic, however. He managed to win a hand when he was at the table with, among others, Steffen Sontheimer. According to some experts, Sontheimer is one of the best poker players in the world.

Van Gerwen can often be found on the poker circuit. Last year he played at the World Series of Poker in Las Vegas. Raymond van Barneveld is another of a number of darts professionals who fancy themselves as a card shark.
