There has been much criticism of the format of the Grand Slam of Darts in recent weeks. Michael van Gerwen has now also joined in this discussion.

Many darters and darts followers find it strange that despite winning a Euro Tour tournament, players have not secured their place in the Grand Slam of Darts. Mensur Suljovic, Joe Cullen and Krzysztof Ratajski are all absent in Wolverhampton, despite winning one of the European Tour events this season. Van Gerwen finds it strange that this trio does not compete at the Grand Slam.

“It would not be my choice to do it that way”, the world number one told Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf. “I don’t think that’s how it should be. It’s just a shame”, Van Gerwen refers to the absence of Suljovic, Cullen and Ratajski.

The field of participants does include female stars Lisa Ashton and Mikuru Suzuki. The Dutchman also has his doubts about this. “I don’t mind that women participate. No problem, not even with eight female competitors. But let them qualify with the men and not separately as is the case now.”

“I don’t think such a thing happens in any other sport. At Wimbledon you don’t suddenly see two women among the men, do you? Anyway, it’s just the rules and you have to deal with that”, Van Gerwen added.
