Conan Whitehead edged out Martin Phillips in a close last set decider and afterwards he admitted he gave him too much respect.
Whitehead said that due to him having been around for a very long time that he is very hard to play.
‘I think I gave him too much respect to be honest. He’s a great player and he’s been around a long time and he’s very well respected on tour so it’s hard to play against someone like that,’ said Whitehead.
On whether the crowd or Phillips got to him, Whitehead said that it was the nerves that mainly took over as opposed to either of the other factors.
‘It was nothing to do with the crowd. But the nerves did kick in at one point and I think they stayed with me right to the end there but thankfully they held out and I nicked the winning double,’ said Whitehead.
