The darts world is in mourning after the sudden death of icon Andy Fordham, who died on Thursday at the age of 59.

As soon as the news of his death trickled out, it was met with reactions from darts organisations, old rivals and new generation darts players. Fordham was especially praised for his character. The Viking was not called the 'people's champion' for nothing.

''A big man with big heart'', Michael van Gerwen said on Twitter. He was characterised as a ''character both on and off the board'' by Simon Whitlock.

Also his old rival Steve Beaton reacted with great dejection. ''Very saddened to hear of the passing away of Andy Fordham. Not only a great friend but a sporting legend who I had the pleasure of knowing for many a year. Our thoughts are with Jenny and the family.''

See below an overview of some of the reactions from the darting world.

The sport of darts has lost one of it’s biggest characters and finest champions. 2004 Lakeside World Championship, 1999 Winmau World Masters and 9x WDF World Cup Gold medal winner. Andy Fordham will be forever remembered. Our sincere condolences go out to his family at this time.
