Glen Durrant’s BDO World Championship title defence started in fine style with a straightforward 3-0 defeat of Gary Robson.

Durrant, who became world champion at the Lakeside 12 months ago, averaged just north of 95 in the defeat of his fellow North-East thrower. The Middlesbrough man started in fine fashion, averaging 102 as he claimed all of the first six legs. Robson’s 86 average, the same he managed in yesterday’s win over Pengiran Mohamed, was not enough to keep the world champion in check. Robson finally got off the mark with a 116 checkout to break throw, but Durrant replied with a 111 to level the scores.
Glen’s double-hitting briefly abandoned him and allowed Robson to break again, but ‘Duzza’ struck back to force a deciding leg in the third set. Durrant went for bull to win the match with a 170, with his opponent on 181, but struck outer bull. It left him a two-dart combination to win the match, and both match darts missed their mark. Robson missed two himself to check out 41 and claim the third set. Durrant, given a second chance, made no mistake. He will face either 16th seed Daryl Fitton or qualifier Justin Thompson in the next round.
