Gary Anderson lost to Michael van Gerwen in Sunday's second semi-final at the PDC World Darts Championship. The two-time world champion described his defeat as an 'ass whooping'.

Anderson lost 6-1 to the world number one in a match that was described before hand as a potential last set decider. He did praise the first semi-final which by contrast saw a coming of age of sorts for Michael Smith, his protege who moved through to the final.
'What a game between Nathan Aspinall and Michael Smith, outstanding game; what a future they both have.' he said.
He added in a message to his supporters: 'Happy new year thanks for all your support!'. Despite the loss to Van Gerwen it has been a great year for Anderson who has arrested the dominance of the Dutchman and he will take that confidence into 2019.
