Daryl Gurney will play in his first Play-Offs at the O2 later on with a clash against Michael van Gerwen awaiting.
He spoke this week about how MVG had made previous comments about him and his ranking. Gurney admitted he was told that it’s because he’s scared of him. He added that he used that to go on and beat him; that’s exactly what he’s done three times in a row. ‘I noticed, playing in the Champions League last year he made a comment that I wasn’t good enough to be in the top eight or the top 10, I’m not sure which one it was,’ Gurney told Metro. ‘I never thought much of it but everybody started telling me that he’s only saying it because he’s worried about me, that’s what a lot of people said to me.’ ‘I took it from there that I could possibly beat him, obviously it’s something that I’m doing that makes him feel that he has to have a wee go at me over nothing. ‘I hadn’t said nothing over him, it just came out of the blue so the the cogs started turning. For me, Gary Anderson is still the second best player in the world and if I can beat him there isn’t much between him and Michael, so I can beat Michael. ‘I never thought about it till people said it to me and I thought I must be doing something right if he’s taking note.’
