Mark McGeeney and Wayne Warren played out yet another nine-set classic in the BDO World Championship quarter-finals.

It was McGeeney who triumphed 5-4 to round off one of the most entertaining days the Lakeside has ever seen. Thee unseeded Welshman started the better of the two, winning 11 of the first 17 legs and taking a 3-1 lead. That was despite McGeeney claiming the opening set. In that time, Warren had a 73 per cent success rate, with the BDO world number one lagging behind on 66.67 per cent.
If the earlier games had taught us anything, it was to expect a comeback to come from anywhere. McGeeney never looked totally out of it, and Warren faltering on the doubles helped his cause. A fantastic 154 checkout restored parity at 3-3. Warren notched up a 130 finish himself, in a game where the finishing was mostly astounding. Sometimes, though, it wasn't. Warren, who had gone 4-3 up, experienced such issues at the worst time of all. With the eighth set locked at 2-2, and with 120 needed for the match, the 55-year-old opened with a treble 20. Needing just a single to leave tops, Warren strayed into the double one. A relieved McGeeney struck double 10, and took the game all the way.
At 2-1 up in the final set, Warren again looked well-placed to win. But once more, he failed to earn a match dart, allowing the Gladiator to make it 2-2. McGeeney broke the throw instantly afterwards. While Warren was charitable, his opponent was anything but. Double eight sealed the triumph, and now McGeeney will take on another unseeded opponent in Michael Unterbuchner in the semi-finals. Should he win, and beat Scott Waites in the final, McGeeney would become the first world champion never to meet a seed on the way to Lakeside glory.
