Martin Adams will not appear at the 2019 BDO World Championship. The last time the Lakeside didn't feature Wolfie was in 1993. For the past quarter of a century, Adams has played in the BDO's biggest event, but was unable to qualify this time around.
The Surrey-born thrower took to the Frimley Green stage for the first time in 1994. He reached the quarter-finals before losing to Magnus Caris. Adams went a step further the next year but lost to Raymond van Barneveld. A decade later, he would finally reach his first final. But it was Barney again who put paid to his title hopes.
It was only a matter of time before Wolfie claimed the biggest title in BDO darts. In the end, it came in the most stunning final of all. The 2007 showdown with Phil Nixon, where the debutant miraculously came back from 6-0 down to force a decider before Adams won out 7-6, went down in the annals of history.
After a pair of semi-final exits, Adams then recorded back-to-back wins in 2010 and 2011. He lost in a remarkable final against Scott Mitchell in 2015, and last year the 62-year-old was edged out of a first round tie in a deciding leg by Mark McGeeney.
Adams even continued to reach Lakeside after being diagnosed with cancer in 2016. But this time around, a lack of success during the season means that his famous Duran Duran-themed walk-on won't be played at Frimley Green.
