Micheal van Gerwen has expressed his pride at being nominated for the overseas sports personality of the year. The BBC award that accompanies the British Sports Personality of the Year will be given out on December 17th.
As quoted on michaelvangerwen.com the Dutchman says the following about his nomination.
"It is a very nice honour to be nominated for this award".
"It is fantastic to be recognised in this way and to be named alongside some brilliant sport stars. It makes me feel very proud"
Van Gerwen is shortlisted with 5 other sporting superstars. Tennis's Roger Federer is the stand out name, as the 19 times Grand Slam winner has excelled in a season many thought he would begin to ease back in.
NFL star quarterback Tom Brady is also shortlisted. The now 40 year-old quarterback led the New England Patriots to a 5th Super-Bowl last year.
Australian Athletics star Sally Pearson, American Swimmer Katie Ledecky and Para-athlete Tatyana McFadden complete the shortlist.
