There was an early shock in Minehead as
Jamie Caven sent eighth seed
Joe Cullen crashing out of the Players Championship. 'Jabba' notched a 156 checkout on the way to edging out Cullen 6-5. Cullen, who struggled for consistency throughout, never broke the Caven throw, and missed one match dart at tops. Caven showed his nerves, missing the board completely when needing a single 16 and drifting into the five when requiring 120 for the match. But the Derby thrower held his nerve and sealed a potential second round tie with James Wade by finding the double 10.
Richard North opened his Players Championship campaign with an impressive 6-1 win over Peter Hudson. North was rarely troubled by the 'Rock', and surged clear after breaking in the third leg. An impressive 130 checkout on the bull was a highlight as the 16th seed progressed with a 99 average. He will fancy his chances against out-of-sorts 17th seed Adrian Lewis - or Mike de Decker - in the second round.
Defeated 2016 finalist
Dave Chisnall squeaked past world number 97 Joe Murnan 6-5 to reach the second round in a match largely lacking in quality. A mediocre Chisnall was 4-1 up, but allowed Murnan to square at 4-4 thanks to some poor finishing. The normally high-scoring Chisnall hit one 180 and averaged 87.53, but crept over the line with 'Shaggy' unable to put pressure under the world number eight in the deciding leg. Next up for Chisnall is James Wilson or William O'Connor.
Mervyn King also needed a decider to defeat Brendan Dolan 6-5. The former runner-up opted to change darts after an indifferent opening five legs in which he broke Dolan, but allowed the Irishman to break back instantly. Another break and a 91 checkout to hold put King within a leg of the match, but six missed match darts allowed Dolan to force a final leg. It was King who held his nerve in a low-scoring game, hitting double four to secure an all-East Anglian clash with Darren Webster in the second round.
