The finest players from within the
BDO/WDF system have been fighting month after month, travelling thousands of miles in their quest to pick up qualifying points at events all over the globe, and now the best 16 men and 8 women have earned automatic, seeded qualification for the 44
th Winmau World Masters.
The tournament, the sport’s longest-running darts major, takes place at the Bridlington Spa from September 25
th to 27
th. With players at the very top of the BDO ranking tables already certain to qualify by the September 11
th cut-off date, attention focused on those on the fringes, and results from the last few qualifying events – the England Classic and Masters, Catalonia Open and FCD Anniversary Open.
Finishes of third and fifth in the England Masters and England Classic were enough to ensure Mark McGeeney (377 ranking points) will go into the event as the number one seed, ahead of reigning World Champion Glen Durrant (361).
Former World Champion and Team Winmau player Scott Mitchell qualifies as the third seed on 340 points thanks to a third place in the England Classic. Hot on his heels after finishing as runner-up in the England Masters, Jamie Hughes is seeded fourth with 328 ranking points.
Just two points separate the Scottish duo of Ross Montgomery (278) and Cameron Menzies (276) in fifth and sixth respectively. In seventh, Holland’s Richard Veenstra (270) qualifies just one point ahead of Belgium’s Geert de Vos.
A strong run-in helped Welshman Martin Phillips qualify in ninth on 261 ranking points ahead of countryman Dean Reynolds (256). Holland’s Wesley Harms (250) qualifies as 11
th seed, with Belgium’s Andy Baetens (248) just behind in 12
th.
Another Dutchman, Willem Mandigers has won automatic qualification as 13
th seed on 246 ranking points, just ahead of Englishmen James Hurrell on 244 points and two-time World Champion and Team Winmau player Scott Waites on 243 points. Rounding off the top 16 seeded men’s qualifiers is Jim Williams from Wales on 242 points.
Some big names have missed out on the automatic seeded positions with Daryl Fitton in 17
th, Martin Adams in 21
st, Team Winmau’s Danny Noppert in 23
rd and Gary Robson in 25
th. Former World Champions and Team Winmau players Andy Fordham and Ted Hankey will have to compete alongside Team Winmau’s Canadian legend, Jeff Smith, via the floor matches to try and make it to the stage finals.
Number one seeded player in the Women’s rankings with 448 points is England’s Deta Hedman, who made sure of her top spot with victory in the England Masters. Pushing her close will be Dutch ace Aileen de Graaf who will be seeded number two thanks to her 416 points.
Lorraine Winstanley secured her number three spot with an emphatic win at the English Classic, adding 35 points to take her ranking total to 396. Triple World Champion, Lisa Ashton has claimed the fourth seed position with 377 points ahead of Australia’s Corrine Hammond (343 points).
Russia’s Anastasia Dobromyslova picked up vital points by finishing third in the England Masters and is number six seed on 342 points.
Ten-times World Champion and Team Winmau player Trina Gulliver MBE secures her place at the Bridlington Spa as seventh seed on 341 points with Holland’s Sharon Prins claiming the eighth and final seed position with 308 points.
Fallon Sherrock was only 4 points off the seeded positions, and Anca Zijlstra from the Netherlands was 15 points from securing automatic qualification as a seed.
“Earning enough points to earn a seeded place at the Winmau World Masters has been a real battle,” says Ian Flack, Winmau’s Sales and Marketing Director. “Even the players at the very top of the ranking tables have not been able to take their foot off the pedal, such is the quality of the players behind them.
“Some big names have missed out on automatic qualification as seeds and will have to compete in the floor rounds to earn a place on one of the biggest stages in the sport,” he adds. “The Winmau World Masters is set to be an amazing tournament once again.”
