Michael Smith in the end came through a commanding victory over Jonny Clayton in the opening round of the World Matchplay yesterday (Saturday) but had to work hard in stages.

The newly crowned Shanghai Darts Masters will be buoyed by the exit of Michael van Gerwen who was in his section of the draw; and admitted Smith is looking forward to Tuesday after feeling ‘dodgy’ at times.
"I kept letting Jonny back in and it was a bit of a struggle, but I'm still in," said Smith, the 2018 Premier League finalist. "I didn't play my best but I ground out the victory.
He added: "I felt like I was a bit dodgy but I'm glad to get over the line and get the win, and I'm looking forward to Tuesday."
