GSOD17 Phil Taylor
Phil Taylor rolled back the years to produce a stunning 16-4 win over Daryl Gurney. The pair met in the first match of tonight's quarter finals with the 16-time world champion showing his class.
Pre-match much was made of Taylor's comments regarding Gurney yesterday. Taylor was quoted as saying he didn't believe the ever rising Northern Irishman was the future of darts.
However Taylor backed up his comments with a superb performance, winning the tie in just 3 sessions!
Early on the pair traded holds to open the match before Taylor broke in just the third leg. The Power would then take out 115, his first of 4 ton plus visits, to lead 3-1. Gurneys first 180 of 7 came in leg 5. He took that one to trail just 3-2 at the first interval.
After the break Taylor would hold again to begin. Despite two visits below 60, Taylor then hit back to back 180's before finishing 28 in one dart. Gurney fought back to take the next 2 legs and level up at 4-4.
After that the Englishman really put his foot down. Despite retiring at the end of the year, the Power looked head and shoulders above his younger opponent. Gurney seemingly dejected with his inability to get back into the game.
Further high finishes of 126, 132 and a 137 with Gurney sat on a double allowed Taylor to win 12 straight legs and close out the match.
The Power finished with 7 maximums as well and was 66.67% on doubles.
He now awaits the winner of Michael van Gerwen vs Rob Cross.
