Van Gerwen edges out defending champion to reach fifth World Grand Prix final

Michael Van Gerwen won by four sets to one in a convincing display over Daryl Gurney. He will now play world number two Peter Wright in Saturdays World Grand Prix final.

Van Gerwen started well finding tops and double 10 for the first two legs. Gurney broke with double 16 before MvG fired in a 11 dart leg for the first set.
The second set began with two holds of throw. Two more holds followed before 'Mighty Mike' kicked off with a 160 and finished on double 18 for a 2-0 lead, moving him closer to his first final since 2016. 'Superchin' checked out 56 to break before Van Gerwen responded with a break of his own to level the set.
In the deciding leg, Van Gerwen started with a 160 and checked out 32 for the set whilst Gurney languished behind. The Dutchman was now just a set from ending Gurney's reign as World Grand Prix champion.
Northern Ireland's number one held throw in the opening leg and broke in leg two. He confidently finished 90 on double 15 to get back into the match. Gurney hit double 10 to win the fourth set and reduce the deficit.
The world number one got back on track with double 5. Gurney held before Van Gerwen found the first ton plus finish with a 115 on double 18. MvG missed double 18 for the match but eventually achieved victory on double 9. He progressed to his fifth World Grand Prix final and ended Gurney's reign as champion.
