Unibet, the sponsors of the European Championship, have released their odds on each of the 32 participants. As winner of 8 of the 13 European Tour events this year, van Gerwen is at 8/11 to defend his title in Dortmund.
Mensur Suljovic, the world number six, is perhaps the surprise installment as second-favourite. With odds of 15/2 to win, Suljovic has been placed ahead of Peter Wright, Rob Cross and Michael Smith. Gerwyn Price and Ian White, winner of European Tour events this year, are at 33/1 and 40/1 respectively. Max Hopp is 125/1 against to pull off a dream win in front of a home crowd. Austrian Darts Open winner Jonny Clayton is at 150/1.
Paul Nicholson, who plays van Gerwen in the first round, is at 300/1 to overcome the Dutchman and go all the way.
