Van Gerwen smashed Gurney in a 7-3 win which included high checkouts of 164 and 170 with a 102 average and 70 percent on the doubles to boot.
The first two legs were shared between the pair before MVG set out a marker in the form of an 11 darter to move 2-1 ahead.
He hit the two aforementioned high checkouts in the requisite legs to make it 4-1 with Gurney's luck summed up by smashing in back to back 180's before not being given a shot with Van Gerwen hitting a 164 checkout.
Gurney stopped the rot and then made it 4-3 meaning he was very much still in the match with a break in tow but his doubles became a problem.
MVG streaked to a 6-3 advantage as Gurney sat at 3/16 on the doubles with crucial missed doubles from 'Superchin'. This allowed the Dutchman to claim the win.
Next up is James Wade against Ian White with either player quite capable of beating Van Gerwen especially 'The Machine' who has enjoyed multiple victories over the World Number One as of late.
