Mitchell Lawrie has well and truly burst onto the darting scene. Less than a month after becoming the youngest Welsh Open champion, the 14-year-old produced a Littler-esque display at the
British Open, in which he won with an astonishing final display.
The event is one of the most famous and historic darts competitions. Players such as Eric Bristow, Bob Anderson, John Lowe, Raymond van Barneveld, Gary Anderson, Michael van Gerwen, and Litter have competed in the event, held since 1975. The Nuke became the youngest person to win the title back in 2023 at the tender age of 16, but his record has just been shattered by Lawrie.
The Scot only averaged below 90 once in the eight matches he played. He started by defeating James Young (4-1), Barry Watson (4-2), and Kevin Lowe (4-2) in the early stages of the competition. In the round of 32, he won a last-leg decider against Tommy Lishman with a ten-darter, finding scores of 180, 137, and 168 to brilliantly set him up on double eight.
He conquered Duncan James (4-1) with ease, before facing fellow Scot Owen Bryceland in the quarter-final, who is only 11 years old. The pair both produced mid-90 averages, something that a lot of professional players would be content with, but it was Lawrie who proved to be too strong, winning 4-1.
He was on the right side of yet another last-leg decider in the semis, just pipping Henry Coates to a place in the final, where he averaged an incredible 102.95 to decimate Ryan Hogarth 5-0 and become the
British Open champion.
Just beforehand, Lawrie had reached the final of the British classic. His average climbed throughout the day and peaked at 100.43 in the last match, but it was not enough on this occasion to defeat Oliver Mitchell.
The young darter has already picked up nine WDF/BDO titles, most notably the Welsh and British Open titles he has recently clinched. There is even a chance that he features in the upcoming WDF World Championships in December. This would closely follow Littler's path to stardom, with him competing in the event when he was 14, losing in the second round.
