Mitchell Lawrie has successfully defended his Singles title at the WDF Europe Youth Cup. The talented Scottish darter bounced back impressively from a disappointment earlier in the day and was crowned European youth champion again by convincingly defeating Belgian Jason Goossens 6-1 in the final.
Superb response after setback
For Lawrie — who at the end of last year was still the
losing finalist at the senior WDF World Championship — finals day began with a blow. Together with his partner he fell short in the final of the Youth Pairs event, denying him a European double.
He had little time to dwell on it, though. A few hours later he was back at the oche for the singles decider, where he showed outstanding mental resilience.
In the final against Belgian Jason Goossens, Lawrie seized the initiative right away. With tidy throwing and heavy scoring he quickly built a big lead. Goossens managed to take one leg, but could hardly put the Scot under pressure after that. Lawrie maintained a high level and ultimately sealed the match convincingly with a 6-1 victory, good for his second consecutive title in the Singles at the
WDF Europe Cup Youth.
Class on display again
In the final the defending champion also showcased his class with two maximums of 180. It underlined once more why he has long been regarded as one of the brightest talents in European youth darts.
With his overall win, Lawrie also makes history. He is only the third player ever to successfully defend the Youth Singles title at the WDF Europe Youth Cup. That makes his feat all the more special, given the consistently high level of competition at the European youth event each year.
For Jason Goossens, the final was a strong result nonetheless. The young darter produced excellent play throughout the tournament and fully deserved his place in the decider. Against a rampant Lawrie, however, there was ultimately no stopping the reigning champion.
Mitchell Lawrie’s successful title defense thus provides a fitting conclusion to another impressive campaign at the WDF Europe Youth Cup. Despite the disappointment in the pairs event, he showed character by responding immediately and emphatically retaining his European singles crown. It confirms his status as one of the most promising youth players of the moment.
