Paul Krohne and Irina Armstrong were crowned champions at the WDF Swiss Open in Zurich. Krohne’s title came at the expense of
Ron Meulenkamp, who narrowly lost the final to the German and thus missed out on a second WDF title.
Meulenkamp delivered a strong level throughout the day, sweeping aside familiar names like Carl Wilkinson and Corné Groeneveld with convincing 4-0 wins. In the semifinal, the Dutchman was on fire and whitewashed England’s Anthony Brown 5-0, posting a spectacular 107.36 average. However, in the final he had to concede to the German.
Krohne, like Meulenkamp, also enjoyed an excellent day. With two 100+ averages and a 95 average, he had few issues en route to the final. The first four legs of the final went with throw, but in leg five Krohne broke with a 12-darter and then consolidated with an 11-darter to move 4-2 ahead. He never relinquished that break, closing out the match 6-4.
In the women’s event, Germany’s Irina Armstrong took the title. In the last 16 she was far too strong for compatriot Carolin Glas with a 4-0 win, before dispatching another compatriot, Lena Zollikofer, 4-0 in the quarterfinals.
She then faced the Netherlands’
Aileen de Graaf in the semifinal. Although the resistance was stiffer, she still won relatively comfortably, 4-1. She sealed the title by defeating Italy’s Aurora Fochesato 5-3 in the final. This continues the run-in towards the
World Masters.
