Save the best for last at the World Seniors Darts Championship as defending champion, Robert Thornton was rampant to begin his title defence at the Circus Tavern with a 3-0 win over Roland Scholten.
A 93.5 average which was the best of the opening round, he produce as usual a double 20 clinic to give 'The Tripod' no chance of an upset and sends a statement out that 'The Thorn' means business once again.
He won the first set all on double 20 with a superb Scholten 131 in between. In set two, he finally missed double 20 but returned for double 10. He missed two at double 16 to break but Scholten missed two at double 20 and Thornton went one away from a 2-0 sets lead.
He couldn’t get the second bull for a 132 but returned for double 20 again for 2-0.
Scholten held to seal his second leg. Thornton broke to go one away though with a 180 and double 20 again. A 180, 140 and he left double 20 from 81 with Scholten way back and pinned it first time for the win.
