It was two contrasting matches to end Saturday's afternoon session at the World Seniors Darts Matchplay with Peter Manley moving through to a tie with his old rival Phil Taylor.
Albeit in a real scrappy affair which saw Manley recover from 5-0 down and survive 11 match darts en route to an 11-10 sudden death win over John Part in Hull.
Part eased into a 4-0 lead and halfway to the finishing line early on in the tie albeit with no player reaching any heights. ‘Darth Maple’ pinned 36 to break throw with Manley spurning darts to hold and he consolidated from there.
Again it was another poor leg but Part did the better power scoring and took out double eight with Manley only leaving 44 in case he was allowed back.
Part had multiple chances to hold his throw before finally hitting double three to make it 5-0. Manley stopped the whitewash on double 10 but it was only a hold as Part sat at 5-1 up.
A 177 from Manley was counteracted by Part with a 137 to leave 62 which he missed on double 16 but Manley failed to hit 92 and Part returned to make it 6-1.
He had darts to go one away but spurned them and Manley held on double 10. Part fluffed his lines looking to hold and a 76 checkout on double four saw ‘One Dart’ make it 6-3.
Manley missed 115 to hold and Part finally stopped his rot on doubles to break back and make it 7-3 to go one away. Part missed match darts after Manley missed darts to break back but he made it 7-4 capitalising to break again. A 25 checkout saw Manley hold to make it 7-5 with Part throwing for the win.
But Manley broke again to make it 7-6. A superb leg though from Part saw him get match darts but he spurned multiple turns and Manley sent it all the way. Part held to go one away. A 54 checkout saw Manley tie it up again at 8-8 and he broke at a pivotal moment and was suddenly throwing for the match.
He missed multiple sets of match darts but spurned them and Part was suddenly tied up at 9-9. He held to go one away at 10-9. Manley lived up to his One Dart moniker pinning double eight to make it 10-10.
But despite throwing for it, Part had a poor start and Manley surged towards the finishing line finishing it with a 41 checkout.
While Peter Evison was all talk before the tournament began speaking about how he deserved to be in the World Seniors tournaments as an invited player without qualifying.
But it was the Order of Merit leader, Colin McGarry who produced another superb display to thrash ‘The Fen Tiger’ letting his darts do the talking in Hull with a record WSDT average of 95.43.
Evison was poor to begin the tie and McGarry continued from where he left off against Deller with a 72 checkout to hold before breaking with another 15-darter on double eight with ‘The Fen Tiger’ cowering way back and he held again to make it 3-0.
The one sided nature of the tie continued as he pinned 125 to leave double eight to break again and go half way to the finishing line. McGarry’s average sat towards 90 and he pinned 101 to go 5-0 up. A superb 134 checkout saw McGarry go two away.
A 136 checkout saw ‘The Chief’ go one away from the win. He hit a 140 to leave double 10 and he sealed it from there.
