Robert Thornton is the first player through to the second round at the World Seniors Darts Championship after a superb opening foray against former World Champion, Bob Anderson.
Thornton won 3-0 with a 94 average as he sent out a message to the field. He will face off against Trina Gulliver MBE in the second round. One of the favourites for the tournament is through.
Thornton looked to ease to the opening set of the tournament but after spurning a chance at a 110 checkout for the set, Anderson broke with a 116 checkout to get himself on the board as he looked to force a decider.
‘The Thorn’ again missed multiple opportunities for the set and handed Anderson a lifeline in the opening set who sent it all the way.
Thornton though kicked off with two 180’s back-to-back but couldn’t get a shot at the nine-dart finish. He returned though and missed a 54 checkout but Anderson was well back which allowed Thornton to hit double 20 for the set.
Anderson missed 101 for the opening leg but 97 wasn’t pinned by Thornton despite a brilliant 171 set up shot. The former returned again but couldn’t pin double eight, Thornton could hit double four though to go a break up in set two.
Thornton was averaging 94 compared to 80 of Anderson and he went 2-0 up in sets on double eight. He missed a 170 checkout for a 2-0 lead but hit double eight to go one away from a tie with Gulliver.
A 180 and 125 followed for Thornton as he looked to seal it pinning it on double 20 to move through with Anderson before he went out producing a 180 and one of his famous 180 finger point celebrations.
