Robert Thornton will face either Martin Adams or Terry Jenkins in the final of the 2022
World Seniors Darts Championship after ending the run of Kevin Painter 4-2.
Thornton will aim to add to his major collection by sealing the inaugural edition at the Circus Tavern after continuing his excellent run over the course of this weekend.
Both players started superbly with a 180 a piece but it was Thornton who took it with a 116 checkout as well as the opening set albeit to be pegged back immediately by Painter to level the tie up at 1-1 in the early going.
This after Thornton missed double eight for the set and Painter produced a 78 checkout to level up. But it was ‘The Thorn’ who took the lead from there as Painter fought back from 2-0 down in the set to force a decider but Thornton produced a 15-darter when it mattered most to go 2-1 up.
Painter produced a moment of class to hit a 170 checkout in the requisite set but Thornton’s charge was not diminished as he went one away from the final only losing one leg in that set which was the ‘Big Fish’.
‘The Artist’ got back to within one at 3-2 down by claiming the requisite set with Thornton missing the bull for a 170 to hit straight back with the biggest checkout of the tournament. But it was ‘The Thorn’ who sealed the tie.
Despite messing up on the 104, Painter was well back and Thornton returned for double 10 to claim the final set 3-1 and find his way through to the final with a 4-2 win.
