Jack Tweddell ascended prior to Q-School into folklore by sealing the ADC Global Championship denying Johnny Haines in the final by the narrowest of margins 9-7.
56 players came just before Christmas to the MODUS Live Lounge in Portsmouth to duke it out to sort out the last eight who would face off in the latter stages. Those eight took to the oche and it was Tweddell who reigned supreme.
Tweddell started off with a bit of a surprise win which set the tone for his run seeing off Tom Sykes who always is a top pick and is again to come through Q-School this week. The Yorkshire thrower has gone full-time chasing his darting dream but seems to be one of those players where he is either on or he is drastically off. He lost out 6-4 to Tweddell.
The semi-final against Gary Stone saw Tweddell go even closer to the last leg as he went to the decider. Neither player found their rhythm but in the end it was Tweddell who sealed the war of attrition at the MODUS Live Lounge. While Haines, his final opponent was very much one for the big occasion as his doubling was iron clad. He saw off Niall Culleton in the Quarter-Finals before seeing off Robbie Martin 7-4. The Punk found his tempo against his semi-final opponent and set up a tie which was an all Swindon affair.
Haines went into a commanding 5-2 lead momentum going his direction. But Tweddell sealed five unanswered legs to get himself onto the board. He went 7-5 up. The 61-year-old Haines, went 8-7 down but it went all the way as Tweddell picked out double 10. He joins Devon Petersen who sealed the title last year and claims £60,000 in the process in a championship designed to compete with the WDF in particular.
Will any of the stars of finals day win through Q-School and find it as good practice? Time will tell but for Tweddell it is a moment that will live on.
