Gary Anderson got his season off and running with a 10-8 victory over Ian White in a closely fought encounter at the 2020 Masters.
White continued his winless record in the tournament in his six years involved; but showed some good form in spells that he will hope to take that forward to next weekend’s Players Championship; while Anderson will face either rival Gerwyn Price or Simon Whitlock in the Quarter-Finals.
It was close to begin the tie with White going 2-1 up but missing two darts at doubles before the interval to edge ahead and this led Anderson to clean up double six to edge ahead 3-2.
They continued to jostle for position in the early going with White himself making it 4-4 with a break of throw and an 11-darter but Anderson himself missed one dart at double to move two legs clear and White hit a 13-darter to make it 5-5.
White went 7-6 up from there despite only hitting 25 percent on doubles and it was very much still anybodies to win at this late stage.
Anderson claimed a timely break to force the initiative hitting a 73 checkout to make it 8-7. He went one away from there hitting double 20 as he looked to be edging over the line.
White had something to say about that pouncing on double 10 after Anderson missed a 170 checkout on the bull to make it 9-8 but this just prolonged proceedings, ‘The Flying Scotsman’ from there concluded the tie.
