Michael van Gerwen has withdrawn from Wednesday’s Players Championship event in Barnsley and the upcoming European Tour event in Riesa this weekend, sources have told Dartsnews.

The latter is almost becoming a tradition, because the last time Van Gerwen participated in the International Darts Open in Riesa was in 2015. One year later the Dutchman had to pull out due to an injury.

The world number one had not entered the International Darts Open in 2017 and 2018. He entered this year, but Van Gerwen decided to go on holiday shortly before the business end of this season. The reigning world champion is going on a holiday to Greece with his family on Thursday.

At the end of September, the 30-year-old will return on the darts circuit. Then he will compete at the Gibraltar Darts Trophy, where Mighty Mike won the title in 2015, 2016 and 2018.
