The third week of play in the tenth season of the MODUS Super Series fell to Sam Spivey. He was the best on Saturday night during the final night of this week of play.
The six best players from the past week met Saturday on the final night. Spivey was in Group B and managed to win his two matches against Ronan McDonagh (4-2) and Charlie Large (4-2). McDonagh advanced to the semifinals as number two after a 4-1 win over Large. In the other pool, all players managed to win once. Alexander Masek won 4-0 over Conan Whitehead, after which Masek did lose 4-2 to Sneyd. Whitehead in turn picked up a win against Sneyd (4-3), but Whitehead was eliminated on the basis of a lesser leg balance. 'The Barbarian' had a leg balance of -3, while his competitors Masek (+2) and Sneyd (+1) both had a positive leg balance from the pool stage.
In the first semifinal, McDonagh proved too strong for Masek 4-3, while Spivey made it to the final match with a 4-3 win over Sneyd. Thus McDonagh and Spivey faced each other for the second time on the night, but once again it was Spivey who prevailed. The final was won 4-1 by Spivey, who is the third weekly winner of this cycle after Alec Small and Jenson Walker.
The MODUS Super Series is a weekly tournament with 12 players competing from Monday through Friday for a spot in the final group, which takes place on Saturday night. A week of play begins with six players competing in Group A. They play against each other once each on the first three days of play. The winner of this pool is directly through to finals night.
The numbers two and three will enter Group B with three new players. They will play each other on Thursday and Friday, after which the top three of this group may also prepare to participate in the final night. The numbers four, five and six from Group A advance to Group C, where they too will be joined by three other players. Two more players from this pool will advance to the final night.
The final night is played on Saturday night starting at 10 p.m. where players compete in a small group stage with two groups of three players, followed by semi-finals and a final to determine the weekly winner. After twelve weeks of competition, all the weekly winners compete in "Champions Week," which is played every thirteen weeks of play to determine who wins the series and takes home the top prize of 25,000 pounds.
