BDO World Championship Preview - Friday evening session

The number 2 seed continues his march towards a first world title in tonight’s clash. The gladiator has already taken the scalps of 3 time champion Martin ‘Wolfie’ Adams, and last years Runner-up Danny Noppert, both tough assignments. The Stockport ace must continue that run if he is to progresss to his first Lakeside Semi-Final. Welshman, and debutant, Wayne warren standing in his way.
Warren has surprised many with his run this year. Having never been beyond the first round before, falling to Mervyn King and Alan Norris. But after wins over Former semi-finalist Wesley Harms, and Willem Mandigers in round 2 mean the 55 year old is one performance away from a semi final spot, and a real crack the Lakeside 2018 title.

Deta Hedman is 11 years older than Lisa Ashton, and has been playing professional darts for 12 more years. She has 168 career titles to Ashton's 49. But in the Lakeside stakes, the score reads Ashton three, Hedman nil. It's about time that the Heart of Darts put that right. She has yet to get out of the blocks in this tournament, with Sharon Prins causing her some real problems despite the 2-0 scoreline. The Lancashire Rose has been put under short bursts of pressure by Rhian Griffiths and Fallon Sherrock, but had the class to swat both aside. In a women's semi-final line-up packed with class, this could well be a thriller. Hedman is the only one of the semi-finalists not to have a Lakeside title. It's about time she changed that, and joined Francis Hoenselaar in challenging the trio's monopoly on the trophy.

Michael Unterbuchner wasn't even a cert to beat David Cameron. Until Cameron's kit failed to turn up, that is. Everyone needs a stroke of luck to succeed, and it's fair to say that the German has had plenty. An off-colour Jamie Hughes missed chances to beat the world number 79, while Martin Phillips dropped off after recovering from a two-set deficit. But Unterbuchner has taken advantage of all of those opportunities. Now he flies the flag for Germany, and his nation will be willing him on as he looks to extend his incredible run. Richard Veenstra is his nation's sole representative, in different circumstances. Chris Landman and Jeffrey Sparidaans went out early. Then Wesley Harms, Derk Telnekes and Anca Zijlstra fell by the wayside. Sharon Prins, Aileen de Graaf, Danny Noppert and Willem Mandigers have all been knocked out too. The Flyer is now flying solo. He wasn't challenged at all by an off-colour Geert de Vos, and he will be expecting more of a challenge in this quarter-final. It will be an unexpected semi-final appearance for whoever wins.
