As well as Peter Machin, Dartsnews also had the chance to catch up with another Grand Slam debutant, Cameron Menzies. In part 1 we speak about how he got into darts, his wins on the BDO tour this year and also his run in Bridlington in the Winmau World Masters.
First of all we asked Cameron about how he got into darts growing up and he spoke about how both his parents play so like Machin he was almost born into it : "Not a problem. Got into it from my Mum and Dad, they both played and still do. They have always run Ayrshire county team so since I remember I have always thrown darts"
We then asked him about his good year so far including winning 2 tournaments which has seen hi climb up the ranking tables to grab a spot in the Grand Slam as well as Lakeside
"I only started doing the tour after winning the Scottish open. It's been a good year darting wise. Only won 2 but I had a few good runs at the higher ranked tournaments which boosted me up the rankings. I have had a steady year, am glad I can actually win against top competitors now rather than pushing them"
Finally we asked him about his Winmau World Masters campaign which saw the Scotsman reach the semi-finals only losing out to eventual winner Krzyzstof Ratajski as well as the return to the venue in Bridlington.
"I like it at Bridlington. I played the youth level at the same venue when I just started making it into the Scotland youth team. So it has a few memories for me. It was run pretty well for me. But I entered in at the last 32 so the place was a lot quieter"
