The evening session of the Champions League kicked off with the two Group B losers,
Rob Cross and
Simon Whitlock. Whitlock started solidly, holding throw with a 46 finish after 17 darts with Cross failing to get a shot at double. The Hastings ace responded with a 16 darter on double eight and the match stayed on hold with Whitlock eventually hitting double seven.
Cross dominated the next leg and comfortably hit double 16 while Whitlock languished behind. Double trouble befell both players in leg five before Whitlock eventually pinned double 10. The first ton plus finish brought the first break of throw when Whitlock hit 116 to move 4-2 ahead. Cross broke back on 73 and consolidated it with a strong hold in the next leg. The players went into the break at 5-5 on hold with both players very evenly matched.
'Voltage' broke throw after the interval with a 108 finish to lead for the first time. He followed that up with a double four to widen his lead to two legs. Cross’s lead quickly evaporated as Whitlock won consecutive legs. Whitlock’s momentum continued as he hit double six to move two legs from victory.
The World Champion’s quality shone through when he hit a magnificent 131 finish with two double tops to break and go one leg from victory. Cross finished The Wizard off in the next leg, planting his second dart into his favourite double 18.
