Dimitri van den Bergh reached the last 16 of the World Championship with an impressive 4-2 defeat of Jan Dekker. The dancing Dream Maker was in hot form as he defeated the Dutchman with some clinical finishing.
The World Youth champion kicked off in style, taking the opening set without dropping a leg. The tables had turned on the pair. Van den Bergh, the power-scorer, was relying on superb double-hitting. And the best checkout man in the game right now was struggling to see off legs but hitting 140s with clinical regularity. Double Dekker, having reached the second round for the first time, was in no mood to let the chance to extend his run slip. Thanks to some top scoring, Dekker was able to level the match with a 3-1 win in legs.
The game required a calm temperament and, though both were keeping cool, van den Bergh's bottle on big checkouts proved decisive. A 108 out set him off in the third set, but the best was yet to come. With Dekker waiting on double eight to extend the set, a brilliant 126 handed the set to the young Belgian. An 11-darter culminating in a 100 checkout set Dekker in front, but van den Bergh levelled before a timely 95 finish put him in front. Again, van den Bergh held his nerve, and made it 3-1.
At 1-1 in the fifth set, van den Bergh missed two crucial darts at double 16 to hold throw. Dekker made no mistake in punishing his opponent, breaking thanks to a double 18. A 177 meant the Dutchman was on the way to the set and the extension of the match - a two-dart 74 finish confirmed it. The all-important set victory meant Dekker needed three holds to level matters, while one break and some ruthlessness on throw would seal the win for van den Bergh. Seeking to reach the third round for the first time, van den Bergh got that vital break at the first time of asking. The PDC prodigy followed it with a 180 in the second leg, and then a 165 to set up tops. Three darts to win the leg came and went, but the fourth was true. Another 180 in the third leg all but wrapped up the best of all Christmas presents. Double seven sealed the deal, meaning van den Bergh will take on Mensur Suljovic or Robert Thonton in the third round.
